In this video I’ll address a common problem that adult learners face – Adult ADHD, especially in relation to essay writing.
I myself have struggled with it, and I’d like to offer you some encouragement by sharing my own story. I struggled with essay writing since grade school, and eventually I began to believe that I was just not cut out for writing and for advanced studies.
I continued to struggle until my second semester in college when I took English 101 with a professor who really knew his stuff. He was brilliant and a natural born teacher. And he taught me how to write, which essentially meant he taught me how to think on paper. Yes, he taught me how to think.
Starting the next semester, I began to get excellent grades on my writing assignments, and I could hardly believe it because I had always struggled with it. Now, I know that ADHD can lead to some serious hurdles for a college student. However, I somehow overcame the writing challenge associated with it.
And I’d like to offer you my theory of what really happened. And what really happened was that I learned a method of writing that actually made sense. It was crystal clear. In fact, it was so clear that it was hard to miss, even for an adult with ADD.
And it occurred to me that maybe some of the biggest challenges that adults face in the academic and professional worlds can be overcome simply by getting a high level of clarity on what exactly the problem is and then taking manageable steps to improve.
So, it’s not like if you have adult ADD, you’re stuck with what you got. No – you can improve, and when it comes to college writing, I’m a living example. Not only did I master it, but I actually developed my own essay writing system.
