Vocabulary Building: “STUPENDOUS” – Meaning and Usage


In today’s video we’ll continue to expand our vocabulary and learn a new English word – “stupendous.”

The root of the word – “stupend” comes from Latin “stupere,” which means “to be struck senseless, to be stunned, astounded.”

And suffix “ous” in English helps form an adjective and means “he who” or “that which.”

Thus, the literal meaning of “stupendous” is simply “he who or that which stuns or astounds.”

To be stupendous means to be extremely impressive, to be amazing.

Here is an example of how to use the word in a sentence:

“The champion’s victory in the final round was just stupendous!”
