Vocabulary Building: “RAVENOUS” – Meaning and Usage


In today’s video we’ll continue to expand our vocabulary and learn a new English word – “ravenous.”

The root of the word – “raven” comes from Latin “rapina,” which means “the act of robbery or plundering.” By the way, the English word “rape” also originates from this Latin word.

And suffix “-ous” in English helps form an adjective and means “he who” or “that which.”

And so, the literal meaning of “ravenous” is “he who commits the act of robbery or plundering.”

To be ravenous means to be extremely hungry or greedy.

Here is an example of how to use the word in a sentence:

“His ravenous appetite was to blame for the extra 50 lbs he gained.”
