Hi. I’m Tutor Phil, and in this video I’ll share with you two skills that are vital to your success in college and even later in the workplace. And these are Perceiving Structures and Creating Structures.
When you’re reading a challenging text, such as The Capital by Karl Marx, for example, you’re essentially Perceiving a Structure. Any piece of writing can be divided into parts, and the best writing usually has a very clear structure.
In order for you to understand the meaning of any piece of writing you must learn how to PERCEIVE its structure.
In other words, you must identify the parts of the piece and find out how these parts are related to each other.
The second skill is Creating Structures, and it’s the twin brother of the first skill.
When you’re writing an essay, you’re essentially CREATING a Structure.
And again, the best essays and research papers are structured with crystal clarity.
The more clear your structure, the easier it is to write that essay and then the easier it is for your professor to read it. So, master these two skills – Perceiving and Creating Structures.
