In this video I’ll show you how to develop an essay topic in 1 minute.
So, let’s go. Today’s topic is “Should Marijuana Be Legalized?”
Step 1. We have to decide – yes or no.
Now, frankly, I don’t know off of the top of my head if it should be legalized. But I’m simply gonna make a decision and say “yes.”
Step 2. I’ll write it out as my thesis – “Marijuana should be legalized.”
Step 3. I’ll use the Power of Three to divide this topic and come up with three reasons why it should be legalized. And let’s go.
Reason 1 – Legal marijuana can have better quality control, which would eliminate really harmful versions of it.
Reason 2 – Since people smoke marijuana anyway, why not legalize it and enable the state to make money instead of drug dealers. Good.
Now Reason 3, which is always a little more challenging after the first two. I’m thinking, I’m thinking. And here I am:
Reason 3 – Marijuana has some health benefits, such as pain relief and stress reduction.
Great. This took us a bit under one minute, and the topic is now developed because we know exactly what to write. And now let’s write out our complete thesis statement:
“Marijuana should be legalized for three reasons. Legal marijuana can have better quality control, which would eliminate really harmful versions of it. Since people smoke marijuana anyway, if it’s legalized, the state can make money off of it instead of drug dealers. Finally, Marijuana has some health benefits, such as pain relief and stress reduction.”
And here we have it – our essay topic developed in about 1 minute and a complete thesis statement, which is a nice, juicy paragraph to open your essay.
