A question/request came in from Anika, and here’s what she is asking:
I subscribed to your channel in order to try and help my daughter develop her writing skills. Unfortunately, these skills are not being taught in school.
She is a bright student and I think the “power of three”, something I didn’t learn until university, is the best writing system! My problem is trying to convey this awesome way of writing to someone her age – she is in middle school.
She gets many writing assignments without any template or guidance to help focus her writing…often very broad scope. They expect the parents to provide help with these projects, and I find it very frustrating.
For example, she has a biography assignment due soon. She is going to do the assignment on her best friend. The only guide lines are to try and focus on the “big stuff”…intro, 3 body paragraphs, and conclusion. She is to formulate questions to ask her friend and use this to help write the biography.
I know about writing in the third person for these assignments and obviously it has to be narrowed with a theme.
It’s difficult because of her age but I think the power of 3 for essay writing is fundamental! I believe that even in grade school, this should be an integral part of the writing/ language arts curriculum. You shouldn’t have to wait until English 101, to learn this!
Is there any way you could provide her with guidance on this project? You have no idea how much I would appreciate your assistance! Making sure my daughter learns this system well, will provide me with the assurance and confidence that she will do well.
As for the criteria for the biography:
- At least 3- 4 double spaced, single sided, hand written pages
- Introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and conclusion…5 paragraphs
- The only other criteria given was to focus on the big stuff like turning points etc.
- They are suppose to formulate questions and work from this
Thank you for entertaining this email and I’m looking forward from hearing from you 🙂
Again, a million thanks!
Anika, I made this video to answer your question and to help your daughter. Enjoy.
