Hi, I’m Tutor Phil, and in this video I’ll be answering a question from a subscriber. So, Sifiso – that’s his name – is asking, “How do I write an essay on what can be done to reduce problems in the world?”
Good question. And here’s the answer. First of all, if you are the one who came up with this topic, in other words, if your professor did not assign it but gave you freedom of choice, then it’s probably a good idea to narrow it down a little.
You see, the world is a very vast topic and that makes it less interesting to read or write about. How can you narrow it? You can choose a country where you want some positive change to happen. OR, you can choose just one problem – ethnic, environmental, social, political, economical, or the like, and focus on it.
Even better to narrow down both geographically and in terms of the problem. For example, you can write about the financial crisis in Greece or zoom in even more and cover the problem of air pollution in Los Angeles or Mexico City.
However, if you really wanted to write an essay on the topic of the whole world, this is how you would do it. As you know I teach the technique called the Power of Three, and it would be very useful here. What are the three biggest problems the world faces today?
You can list the immigration crisis, the global warming, and the worldwide recession, for example. And then your paper will have three sections, and in each section you would simply talk about each of these problems.
And I hope you see by now that it’s much better to narrow down the topic to one such issue and focus on it. Your essay will be much more interesting and easier to write, too.
We’ll talk more about how to develop essay topics in the future videos but, in the mean time, go ahead and pick up your gift here…
